Preparing for your travel consultation

Book your pre-travel health assessment at least 6 weeks before departure when you can, and plan for a pharmacist-led visit in person, by phone, or online.

Sections reflect how travel health staff explain the visit; they are composite guidance, not quotes from one person.

Book ahead of departure

Allow time for vaccines that need multiple doses or weeks to take effect.

We recommend booking your pre-travel health assessment and vaccine administration at least 6 weeks before you leave. Some vaccines require more than one dose, some cannot be given at the same time as others, and protection can take several weeks after a dose.

If your trip is sooner, still book: a pharmacist may offer advice and alternatives to help reduce travel health risks. Consultations are available in person, over the phone, or online.

What the assessment covers

Your itinerary and health history drive vaccine and medication recommendations.

A Certified Travel Health (CTH) pharmacist conducts the pre-travel health assessment for you and your travel companions. The visit uses factors such as age, sex, pre-existing medical conditions, destination, length of stay, season and climate, type of accommodations, immunization status, activities and itinerary, local conditions at destination, and your current state of health.

From that review we provide necessary travel vaccinations, preventative medications for conditions such as malaria and gastrointestinal illness when appropriate, and specific guidance on yellow fever and other precautions for your destination. We collaborate with your physician when needed so your trip is as safe as possible.

Insider tips

  • Complete the online pre-appointment questionnaire before you arrive.
  • For a group, one appointment is enough, but each traveller needs their own pre-appointment form.

Consultation fee and vaccines

The individual consult is $70; vaccine and medication products are priced separately.

The individual pre-travel consult is $70 and typically takes about 30–60 minutes. Virtual consults and group discounts are listed on the price list. That fee includes administering injections but not the cost of vaccine supplies or antibiotics themselves.

Long Sault Travel Clinic is a fee-for-service travel clinic: payment is collected at the time of service. After your session we can email or provide an itemized bill so you can submit for reimbursement if your insurer allows. Most insurers cover many medications, but there is no guarantee they will cover the consultation fee; check with your insurance company.

The consultation fee is not covered by Ontario provincial health care (OHIP). Some medications and vaccines may be covered by the province or private drug benefit plans.
